Parking Problems in Dyker Heights

It’s hard enough to find a parking space in Brooklyn. It even harder in Dyker Heights by having to deal with illegal curb cuts that eliminate precious spots and greedy business owners who leave their commercial vehicles parked on the streets overnight. The parking space shortage has escalated in recent years in Dyker Heights.

This past summer, parking and traffic issues was the main focus at the Dyker Heights Civic Association.  Homeowners are required to apply for permits from the Department of Buildings (DOB) to install curb cuts, but many residents break the rules and put in curb cuts illegally. As a result, the illegal curb cuts eat up what would have been parking spaces. Residents at the meeting also shared their suspicions about business owners in the neighborhood who are operating commercial enterprises and parking their commercial vans on the streets. It is in fact illegal in New York City to park a commercial truck or van on the street overnight.

The problem with business owners is that many of them are dishonest and don’t bother to put commercial license plates on their vehicles. The problem with the curb cuts is that the only thing you can do is file a complaint and hope they stack up in your favor.
